Thai Bodywork
the philosophical bones of thai bodywork are In balancing the elements & the focus is to create space within the body.
may you connect to the wind, water, fire and earth of your being
The foundation of Thai Bodywork is based in Buddhism and Thai Element Theory and I use these components to fuel my practice. My Thai work is done on a floor mat with the receiver wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
I may use palms, elbows, forearms, knees and feet to compress muscles, free constriction through gentle stretches, inspire space through pressure points. We may utilize herbal compresses, scraping, cupping, drumming to assist the body in finding relief.
Thai massage creates spaces and allows for healthy nerve flow, blood flow, and flow of the lymphatic system. Nutrients move into muscles, pressure is released from organs, joints develop more movement... the body weaves itself into cohesion!
This method soothes many systems of the body and inspires smoother and clearer communication between them... the muscular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive. When the physical body is soothed the mind can follow.
** A note on Thai Bodywork, cultural appropriation and my cultural positionality: Traditional Thai massage has many levels of expertise that a practitioner can choose to ascend to. The techniques that have been gifted to me through the lineage of my teachers Nephyr Jacobsen, Varuni Bond and Tevijjo Yogi with the knowledge that I am not a Thai person and am practicing outside of Thailand in a non-traditional cultural context. It is important to me as a practitioner to engage in cultural appreciation vs. appropriation by honoring the lineage of the teachings myself and my clients are benefiting from and staying within the limits and boundaries of the traditional knowledge I have been gifted in ceremony. While I am also trained in massage techniques that come from the lineages of my European ancestors, I find that Thai massage has made a wonderful addition to my practice and I am very grateful for the gift of that knowledge from my Thai Bodywork teachers.
I am currently living and practicing in Bellingham, Washington on occupied Semiahmoo and Coast Salish land. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and am kin to European settlers. If you have further questions about my identity that you feel are important to you as we work together, please feel free to contact me.
